About
Swahili Design Lab (SDL)is a science-from-lab-to-impact venture development organization dedicated to transforming scientific research from laboratories into tangible, sustainable impact ventures across Africa, with a primary focus on Kenya. The organization addresses the critical gap between scientific discovery and real-world application, fostering innovations that drive socio-economic development.
The urgent need for localized innovation in Africa is evident. Despite the continent's immense potential and a growing innovation ecosystem, significant underinvestment in Research and Development (R&D) and persistent challenges in research commercialization create a profound "valley of death" for promising discoveries. We intervene to bridge this crucial gap, ensuring that African-led science directly addresses local challenges and contributes to self-sustaining progress.
Swahili Design Lab's unique model is built on an integrated venture development approach. It provides tailored support, strategic partnerships, and robust capacity building to de-risk the journey from lab to market. This model is designed to generate measurable societal and economic returns, aligning directly with national development agendas such as Kenya's Vision 2030 and the African Union's Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034), while making substantial contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mission:
The organization's mission is to bridge the critical "valley of death" between research and real-world application, fostering a vibrant ecosystem where scientific innovation flourishes into tangible solutions for communities across Kenya and beyond. Swahili Design Lab aims to be the premier catalyst for African-led, science-based impact.
Vision:
Swahili Design Lab envisions a future where African scientific discoveries are systematically transformed into sustainable, impactful ventures that address pressing societal challenges and drive economic growth.
